How Much is my Private Number Plate Worth?

If you happen to own a private number plate that you no longer need, you may have considered selling it. But that can be easier said than done. First, you will need to determine the value of your number plate.

Knowing what your private reg is actually worth can make a big difference to your profit. But how can you find out the value of your cherished number plate before you decide to sell?

While it may seem easy to price your plates, it is actually more complicated than you might think. Just one letter or digit can make a huge difference to the price, as can the desirability of the plate.

Depending on the word or statement that your plate contains, it will affect the amount you can sell it for and how wide the market is.

For example:

A number plate that reads N12 RSE (Nurse) may seem very valuable to you if that’s your job, but it really only appeals to other people working in the same profession and therefore may not be as worth as much as you think.

While a plate that has a broader appeal like COO 7L (COOL) may demand a much higher price due to its popularity.

So how do you determine a realistic value for your private number plate? Fortunately, it is easy to obtain an accurate valuation with Swiftreg. Simply go to Sell Your Plate and enter your details in the form.

Click ‘Request Valuation’ and our team of experts will provide feedback on your plate’s value within 24-48 hours in most cases. Then you can decide, if you are satisfied with the evaluation, to proceed with selling your private number plate with us.

How to sell your plate

Should you decide to sell your number plate, there are a number of options available to you. First, you will need to make sure that your plate is actually transferable by checking your documentation. If it contains the words ‘non-transferable’ you will not be able to sell the plate.

The vehicle that the plate is assigned to should be registered to your name and you need to be in possession of a V750 Certificate of Entitlement or a V778 Certificate of Retention before trying to sell.

Assuming that your private plates are eligible to be sold there are a couple of ways you can do this. You could sell them privately by advertising in the local paper, or sell them through an online site like eBay or Gumtree.

While these can be great ways to sell your cherished number plate you will also have to be on the alert for scammers and make sure that all the sales documentation is completed correctly.

Make a mistake and you could run into legal problems.

To take the stress out of selling your number plates, Swiftreg can help you to advertise to over 5,000 people who visit our site daily, and there are no fees for listing and advertising with us. We sell thousands of personalised registration plates from the DVLA, private sellers, and our own stock.
